Homemade Jam.

Although I didn't make this as a gift, homemade jams and preserves can definitely be given to friends and family members as gifts, wrapped up in a nice mason jar tied up in a fancy little bow/ribbon.

With the excitement of his new juicer, my father in law has recently started making various flavours of homemade fruit juices. Along with making juice, comes a whole lot of fruit pulp. Sometimes, my father in law and mother in law both like eating the pulp just like that. However, when I spent my afternoon at their house a couple of weeks ago, my mother in law suggested I take home their extra pulp and cook something out of it. She knows I have a passion for cooking and baking, so I liked her suggestion.

Mind you, I've never made jam before, so I decided to find a simple recipe online that required few ingredients, and a few steps. Here's what I found.

Mixed Fruit Jam Recipe Ingredients

1 kg mixed fruit-peeled and chopped
1 kg sugar
1/4 cup lemon juice or to taste

Mixed Fruit Jam Recipe Procedure

Put the fruit in a steel or glass container, cover with water and keep overnight.

Transfer to a heavy based sauce pan, bring to a boil and cook till soft.

Strain through a soup strainer or blend and strain.

Put back onto the stove and bring to a boil again and cook, stirring to avoid scorching.

When slightly thinner than jam consistency, add the sugar and lemon juice.

Lower the heat and keep stirring till sugar is dissolved (not letting it coming to a boil before that).

When sugar is dissolved, bring to a boil and cook, stirring all the time (or else it will caramelize at the bottom and change flavor).

When a drop placed over a cold surface sets, the jam is ready. Store in sterilized, airtight jars.
For me, I skipped the first step since I already had pulp. The only thing I would have changed was decrease the sugar. The combination of fruit I had (apples, oranges, pears, grapes, strawberries) was already naturally sweet.
Here's the final product (I don't know how to flip it sideways):
